there are many language CD's and DVD's available to buy
howevers i think there's now many online language translators too!
even trying out the google translate can work, howevers the Greek language is rather back to front plus of course the cyrillic letters can take a while to get to grips with
and of course, nowadays, most Greeks speak English which makes us even lazier! |

the following from anon
Quoted Text I did contact the Greek Embassy in the UK with regard to the problems the Greek Customs officers gave the English taking in their cars from the UK. after a visit to Greece to check out property prices, I think the sun's gone to their heads! i couldn't find anything, in rubbish condition I may add, under 75000 euros! i was shown what appeared to be a pile of rubble left over from the Acropolis, they described it in the brochure as a villa requiring some modernisation! they wanted 175000 euros does anyone know what (apart from Raki) that they are on? |
nope! lol |

My daughter is 13. When she is 15, she wants, as her reward for her standard grades, to go on holiday in Greece to see all the mythological sites that she constantly reads about in her Classical Studies. She loves the myths and legends and is utterly entranced by everything to do with this subject.
So can anyone recommend a small family run company that could organise a tour for an adult and 15 year old to see these sites.
Cheers Frances frances"at"fstaylor.co.uk |

hello all, Thank you for the tips about the Greek language-----I hope to learn a second language real soon. It is difficult to just read, if you can not hear how it should sound too.
Maybe one can buy a CD or find it online, for at least the basic words you need as a traveler. Things like: Where is the restaurant, how much is the beer or wine, currency talk and so on.
So, a swear word that is endearing----strange concept that is. |

|
writing the phonetic for these little Greek translations is always difficult, i have found that it's much easier to learn another language when you are actually in the country and need to say a specific word
you will hear some words very frequently, just ask the meaning and write down the translation, its amazing how you will remember it for next time you need to say that word, or you hear that word!
alas a very frequent word you will hear from the Greeks, usually only the male Greeks, is actually quite a rude swear word, but in its everyday speach, its used in quite an endearing way!
I found that you cannot literally translate some of the expressions from Greek to English as they seem to make no sense......

DO YOU KNOW SOMEONE WHO IS?
ITV1 are making the second series of ‘No Place Like Home?’ about British Ex-Pats who are considering moving back to the UK. However, it’s not an easy decision – what if you make a mistake? You’ll be flown back to the UK and given the opportunity to ‘test-drive’ the reality of living in the UK. ...
